Love is Love

Lovely Sisters,

It’s been awhile! But here we are again. The wheel has only recently moved past Imbolc and now we approach Valentine’s Day.

A Day that is DEVOTED to celebrating LOVE

I remember several years back the first Valentine’s Day Sister Spirit Sanctuary circle of women celebrated together. It was a circle of  Divine Chocolate Decadence. In fact, that’s what we called it.

It was an icy and freezing February that year. There were driving restrictions in place because the city was in pretty bad shape and yet, there were a brave bunch of women who dared make it to the Goddess House despite the weather.

There was one rule:

Everything edible had to be Chocolate of sorts.

Everyone brought such mouth-watering delicious chocolates; some were bought and many were home-made chocolate delights. We had chocolate covered and dipped cherries, strawberries and other fruit. There were pretzels, cookies, wafers and brownies. There was souffle, pudding, cheesecake and even donuts. All the divine dishes were wonderful. But there was one in particular chocolate-mint crunchiness delight that is something in particular that remains in my mind. I have no idea what it was or how it was made but by Goddess, I loved it the best!

The Festival

Our altar was stunning. The statue of Aphrodite was center and all around her were red rose petals and glitter and colored ‘rhinestones’. We also placed flowers and glittery hearts among the red, white and black candles in crystal holders. Candy was dispersed throughout. There was no mistake this was an altar dedicated to Love and Chocolate. Or Love OF Chocolate. However you wanted to look at it, LOVE was a definite theme.

We cut out paper hearts and put words of love on them. Each woman drew one out of the “Basket of Love” and that was her focus word and she was instructed to draw on that energy in as many ways as she could and then share her experiences of how it manifested in her life at next sister circle.

Yes, it was a great time! Those women are no longer with us in the re-birthed circle but I remember and honor their energy and participation and I am grateful. Thank you ladies, if you ever read this, you know who you are.

I thought about doing something similar this year but for some reason, the pull wasn’t strong enough. Perhaps it was that I wasn’t as connected to the idea as I am now. Valentine’s Day is just a couple of days away and I think, “Maybe next year.”

Then I thought of all the posts I’m seeing on Facebook and blogs written and even my friends (even the fellas!) expressing this Scroogian bah-humbug kind of attitude towards Valentine’s Day, a day where LOVE is celebrated!

Then I thought, “Who said Love only means ROMANTIC Love?”

Love is Love is Love is LOVE!

Then I began to realize how seriously we need a real, wild, juicy, exciting LOVE-A-LUTION to take place. If we can’t we get a world-wide thing happening then why can’t we have a LoVe-A-LuTiOn for ourselves?

So many of my sisters saying “Screw Valentine’s Day! No One Loves Me Anyway!” when what they really mean is they don’t have a man in their lives a that moment (smh) or they do and he’s a piece of doo-doo. Smh again.

To those sisters I say:

There is REASON for the saying, “If you don’t love yourself, NO ONE else will.”

It starts first with YOU beautiful Sister. YOU.

Aren’t you worth it?

Who says you need someone ELSE to honor the Goddess of Love within YOU? Is there some HARDCORE rule, unspoken or written on this topic that I’m totally in the dark about?

If there is, well, heh! You know, I’m a natural-born rebel and RULES ARE MADE TO BE BROKEN! At least some are and this would fall into that category.

This is a Divine time to honor yourself Beautiful Sisters if you are without partner. They are nice but not a necessary part of giving yourself GOOD LOVE.

I didn’t say masturbation but GOOD LOVE. Giving yourself GOOD LOVE and masturbation are not one in the same. BUT they could be. If you feel moved to show this LOVE to your Body Temple then the right is yours.

ALL ACTS OF LOVE AND PLEASURE ARE MY RITUALS so says the Goddess in the Charge of the Goddess.

Love & More Love and How to Give It

Champagne, Chocolate, Roses and all those cutesy cards? You can get/make that all for yourself. There is no good reason why you can’t eat good food, drink some good wine and treat yourself to a massage or a movie whether you rent it or go to a show.

You could and SHOULD write YOURSELF a  little LOVE letter. Even make it saucy one if you want to! Tell yourself that you are something special and you deserve the BEST. You can make it as artsy or as plain as you want. It’s your choice but pouring out those words of LOVE and ADMIRATION to your OWN SELF is an experience like no other.

Who ELSE but you deserves to  fill you up with LOVE for yourself. Adorning yourself with praise, and kind words and lavishing yourself in the lusciousness of LOVE.

If You Don’t Love Yourself, No One Else Will

No one will ever love you the way you need to be loved until you first LOVE YOURSELF. No one will cater to your body, heart, mind and soul until you first love the Self that is you. It’s not that they don’t want to but it’s that they can’t. Not really and definitely not fully.

So begin with being your own BIGGEST and BESTEST Valentine this year, and awaken the Goddess of Love and Pleasure within and bask in Her energy!

Every day and ANY day can be Valentine’s Day or a Day Of DELIGHT and LOVE! Whenever you need it don’t wait for someone ELSE to give it to you when you can give LOVE to yourself.

In HONOR of the LOVE theme and the memory of a beautiful songstress, the one and ONLY and ever shall be, Whitney Houston

Sister Social: Open Circles For Women

Sister Spirit Sanctuary will now be holding a “Sister Social” gathering every other Monday evening from 6:30 pm to 8:30pm

BAM! (Books-A-Million)

335 Howe Ave, Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44221

(where Borders used to be)

In the Joe Muggs Cafe area.

Sister Socials are open to all women who would like to come gather with other women seeking Goddess spirituality, sisterhood, camaraderie and friendship. We will have open discussion on topics relevant to the path of Goddess Spirituality and Self-development, and women’s issues, as well as just the conversation of women seeking to get acquainted with each other.

The main purpose of having a Sister Social is to have a place for women who wish to explore the topics of Goddess spirituality in a relaxed, informal and comfortable environmentbut aren’t quite ready to take that leap into the deep work that the Sister Circle provides space for. In this informal circle, women can come and get to know the women of Sister Spirit Sanctuary as well as get to know one another. This also allows women to get a feel for whether or not this is something they wish to take to another level or are comfortable right where they are.  For some women, the Sister Social will be enough. For others, it may be the bridge to something deeper. Whatever her purpose is, we believe there is something wonderful to be gained from gathering with other women in light conversation, with a little coffee or tea and just enjoying the presence of other women.

Our monthly gathering of Sister Circles will continue, however on an invitation basis only. Ironically, what started out as a women’s open circle to explore Goddess Spirituality and empowerment has taken on a life of its own and developed into a space of deep sharing, healing and amazing transformation in the lives of women who attend on a regular basis, thus becoming “Circle Sisters”.

Ideally, we would love for all women to be able to experience the rich, deep unfolding processes of learning, exploration and healing that our Sister Circles offer. However, realistically, we also understand that it is not conducive to the positive growth of the circle if we allow women to come into this sacred space without having an understanding of the women of the circle and/or having ever experienced what it is to be in sacred space with women-only.

Our Sister Circles have proved to be very powerful places of release and healing due to a level of deep sharing within it built upon the trust that has grown among the women. Because of this, we feel that having women in attendance to the Sister Circle without fully understanding what to expect and/or not knowing anyone enough to be able to open up and share is not helpful to the Circle dynamics.

So if you are a woman out there who has been wanting to attend Sister Circles, a woman who has emailed me at one time or another wanting to come but then was unsure or too nervous to show up (and I know you are out there), take advantage of this opportunity and join us for a little coffee, tea or something light to eat in the Joe Muggs cafe locate inside BAM! every other Monday night beginning November 21st at 6:30 pm to 8:30pm.

If you intend on stopping in, drop me an email so we know to look for you!

Look forward to seeing you there!

Love and Magick,

June Sister Circle: Awakening the Priestess Within

The monthly sister circle of Sister Spirit Sanctuary A Temple of the Sacred Feminine is June 26th 4 p.m to 7 p.m

Sister Spirit Sanctuary, Temple of the Sacred Feminine is an open circle of women, for women who are seeking women-centered, Goddess-based spirituality. We are women who are building and experiencing sisterhood and self-empowerment through healing, education and ritual. We are based in Akron, Ohio.

This months theme: Awakening the Priestess Within

All women have inside of themselves many different and powerful feminine archetypal energies and patterns waiting to be explored. One of these powerful archetypal energies is “The Priestess” or “High Priestess” as some like to refer to this archetypal energy. No matter how it is called, this archetypal energy is the same; it is potent, powerful and transformational. On Sunday, June 26th, we will explore this sacred archetype of the Priestess or “High Priestess” as she is known and depicted in the Tarot. The Priestess archetype represents in us our higher wisdom, truth and vision.

The Priestess archetype is possibly the least known and understood, especially in the present patriarchal culture which dominates and subjugates women‘s spirituality. The Priestess archetype is the domain of intuitive awareness and insight, of secret or “occult” (that which is hidden) knowledge of the unknown realm.

The Priestess has a magical connection to the unknown, the void of creation, source energy. She is the trans-connector, the facilitator, between the material and the spiritual, the mediator of powerful energies that make up the being that we are. The Priestess calls forth, transmutes and directs energies between unconscious and conscious awareness, affecting our material and spiritual felt sense of being.

A woman in the fullness of the Priestess archetype feels like this:
She is the master of her spiritual and material realities showing a confidence of bearing that knows how to call forth from spiritual storehouses what is needed to transmute, transduce, transform energies that would overtake or topple other women not in this fullness.

She is thoughtful, reflective, having depth to her presence and intellect. She knows how to detach from inner and outer storms and how to connect deep inner truths and resources with her experience of life. She sees a higher possibility and attunes to its resonance. She is not easily pushed or pulled around by faddish influences but brings power and confidence to difficult situations requiring change or shifting -with grace and insight.

The woman in the fullness of the Priestess archetype is transpersonally engaging with others, serving their need for love and acceptance and spiritual grounding through her presence and expression/interaction. She serves expansive consciousness, a higher possibility and the greater good with humility and grace, not from Egoic desire for prominence or position.

The priestess longs to be remembered once more and awakened. She yearns to be brought forth in our daily consciousness so that we may manifest her sacredness in our daily lives. Awakening to the Priestess within is to awaken to the inherent and natural ability within oneself to be this conduit and director of energies between our conscious and unconscious awareness with the knowledge and wisdom to transmute and change these energies that affect our physical and spiritual realms.

The Creative Expression Work:

In this cosmic energy path working of reconnecting with The Priestess archetype, we will be making sacred headdresses to wear during our personal workings and any time we want to feel the Priestess within at work.

The Priestess headdress is first and foremost, as a symbol of a woman in her own spiritual authority. Often ritual headdresses of the Priestesses in the Goddess traditions have some sort of moon element on them. This is because it represents the power of the subconscious and the levels of the deeper and divine mind as well as our intuition. In the Tarot, The High Priestess and the Moon card represent a knowing that there is an intertwining consciousness to all life including the subconscious and intuition.

When a woman places the diadem or headdress upon her head, she is consciously signaling to her Priestess Self to awaken within and in doing so, she therefore can allow this Priestess energy to lead her while the conscious-ego self steps aside to let the Priestess within do her work.  Being a powerful conduit of energy, when the Priestess arrives, the subconscious is allowed to move and flow, and in that “moving and flowing” we are capable of getting in touch with our authentic Selves and true natures.  It is learning how to awaken and harness this deep and powerful wisdom that we are better able to manifest astonishing and changes in our lives for the betterment of our selves and the world in which we live.

Making a ritual Priestess headdress can be a lot of fun to make as well. It needn’t be hard and difficult. It can be as simple or as extravagant as one desires. It can be made from precious metals, leathers and stones or made from fabric, a string of gems, ribbons, a plain bridal head band and glue. We will be making two types of simple; fabric based ones for our “Awakening the Priestess Within” Sister Circle.

Those planning to come should bring the following items:

For the Priestess Headdress

Your choice of fabric that can be cut into strips to braid together or a long scarf that can tie around the head.

A hard head band, plain or one that can be covered–it can be used as a firm base.

Ribbon in colors of your choosing

  • Silk flowers, long strings of beads and/or pieces from old costume jewelry that you can recycle some pieces from or use as a center piece.
Other suggested items can be:
A crescent moon shape that can be fashioned on headdress, binding cords  or anything that has some spiritual and personal significance to you and can be attached to the headdress.
For the Gathering of Sisters:
  • Your own personal candle for the altar
  • Anything of personal or symbolic value you would like to share and bring to the altar; a piece of your energy telling us who you are. (A picture, a trinket, your own altar cloth to add to the altar etc…you take this home with you when you go)
  • A food dish for sharing the feast afterward
  • Pillow/blanket/Cushion to sit on
  • Drums, rattles or other shakers

We will be meeting at the Temple home base.  Weather permitting we may be outside for a drumming circle.

If you plan to attend or need directions, please contact me via email at:

I look forward to seeing you there!

Receiving Mama’s Support: July S3 circle

Ah, what can I say? The same thing I always say–every time the women gather in spirit of sisterhood, learning and sharing it is simply magic. It is empowering. It is something that can not be fully expressed in written word or picture but must be experienced.

Our sister circle meets on every fourth Sunday of the month and I find myself looking forward to that one day with women in sacred space. I look forward to the exploration of the Divine Feminine together and the awakening of consciousness that takes place within the circle and without.

Yesterday, July 25th was another beautiful and amazing gathering of women. New faces (we love when new women come to circle!) and familiar faces and faces we haven’t seen in a while were there.  Our circle just continues to grow in a healthy manner and we are grateful. Goddess brings the women!

Women come from all directions to share sacred space with us. Some even over an hour away.  I am feel blessed and honored that our circle of women have touched them in such a way they are willing to make that drive to be with us here in Akron, with this particular group of women, in this particular circle. That says a lot about the amazing circle of women we have!

Sunday’s July 25th circle was a different circle, with different energy but no less wonderful and amazing as it has always been.  We got off to a bit of a late start as we were waiting for a beloved sister who had previously thought she would not be able to attend and learned she’d be able to only shortly before the starting time.  Since she had a bit of a drive ahead of her, we decided to give it a bit and sit around upstairs chatting a bit longer before getting started. After about a 20 minute head-start we went into Temple space and created our altar. We used a vibrant red cloth only (which I typically always have on the altar in some way as symbol of our blood mysteries) as it read represents well the “Root Chakra” energy we were going to be working with.

Every put their personal effects on the altar and our candles, the little cauldron and chalice of water.  When it was set up it was simple but absolutely beautiful.

We then began our intros and then I briefly explained council as I do every circle.

This is where we “pass the rattle” and practice deep listening while every woman has a chance to share her truth or stories or new. Whatever she wants to bring to center, we lend her our undivided attention.

Even when minor interruptions happen like women coming in a little bit late, when they come quietly and get in circle the flow of the energy and sharing is easily contained.  So as the women arrived we continued our sharing and when all were finished, we then went into a moment of calm and breathing and grounding ourselves a little more deeply.

Smudging had already taken place earlier so when we were ready, we cast circle but this time we did something a little different.  I really wanted to engage the women, get them a little more involved with the calling and creating of our sacred space. After all, it is theirs as well as mine.  So this time I explained to them that I would evoke an element in the usual way however, I would like for them to add to, according to the element, what they wish to bring into the space we were creating.  It went a little like this:

“To the spirits of the East, the element of air, I awaken, stir and call forth the divine essence of your being, from deep places within our unconscious mind, from the places of creation in our womb, from the vast places of space and time, from above and below, as within as without I call forth the power of inspiration, of breath and of voice …..

Next sister added ” I call forth wisdom….and then another woman added ” I call forth butterflies” and then to the next woman, “I call forth new beginnings” and so forth until we were all the way around the circle again and ended with a pronounced “So Mote it Be!”

We continued in this manner with all of the elements and so when had finished evoking them, our circle was filled with the essence of the energies we called forth, from qualities of specific elements to the little creatures that represent or symbolize them. It was incredible.

I then evoked the Goddess Gaia, asking Her to bless our journey, bless our circle and to guide us and connect us to Her sacred wisdom. To allow us to find Her within reconnect to Her energy and learn to nurture ourselves, mind, body and spirit.

We started our “Journey Through the Chakras” series and the exploration of the archetypes associated with each chakra. This month we began at with the Root Chakra and the dysfunctional archetype of “The Victim” and the healthy archetype of “The Mother”.

We talked a bit about energy, what it is, how it works, how we are composed of energy and why need it. We then discussed energy in relation to the 7 main chakras in general but focus was specifically on the root chakra. The connection to the Earth and stability.  This led us into the archetype of “The Victim”.  We talked about ways in which we have cut ourselves off from the sustenance and nurturing of the Mother, of the Earth Herself and how we’ve found ourselves relating to archetype of “The Victim” at certain times in our lives.

We analyzed some questions for ourselves, explored some scenarios in which we have found ourselves to be victimized or played the victim at one time or another (or if we were victims now).  Through our discussion and understanding of the root chakra and it’s connection to the Earth Mother, and how we cut ourselves off from Her energy and support, we came to understand that we didn’t have to be victims. We understood that we have choices.  And the first step in not being a victim is taking responsibility for our lives.

We came to remember and understand that The Great Mother Gaia gives us the strength we need, the stability and the sustenance to nurture ourselves with Her energy.  When we are connected to Her, we can provide for ourselves; we aren’t dependent on another for our happiness and well-being. When we are connected to Mother and learn how to mother ourselves, our most basic needs are met and we are not struggling right into the depths of despair, playing victim.  Instead, we are supported as our needs are much more easily met.

We recognized by understanding the root chakra and the earth energy that it is vital to healthy spiritual, personal and physical growth that we remain grounded in the Earth Mother. She is our main source of stability and cutting ourselves off from Her, as many us have at one time or another, leads us right down the path of victim-hood.

We did some acknowledging of our feelings of being the victim and we affirmed individually out loud that we choose to release <insert feeling that kept us victimized> and allow ourselves step closer to oneness with the Great Mother Gaia and allow Her to sustain us, to guide us, to lead us to ourselves to nurture and mother ourselves.

We talked about in-depth how the root chakra relates to this and how we can keep that connection open, free and clear to receive the energy up from the earth into our body and into our sense of being. We did some breath work and a powerful meditation where we allowed our roots to stem down from our body right into the depth of the deep, dark, moist Earth to receive Her energy.  I encouraged the women to visualize a glowing, powerful red light at the base of our spine, slowly spinning at first and then gaining momentum until it began to grow larger, spin faster and became very bright. As we held the vision of a spinning red spiral at our root, we chanted “Gaia” several times to acknowledge the connection between Mother Earth and her daughters through the root.

We allowed a few moments for reflection, to embrace being fully present in the moment and to enjoy the feeling of energy flowing up and through our bodies.

After reflecting, I asked the women to stand up in the circle and I showed them some simple exercises they could do to keep the chakra open. A simple marching in place, stomping and even leg squats.  We did each a few times and then we once again chanted “Gaia” several times to acknowledge the connection.

We then had some brief discussion on what took place in the circle and then it was time to close.  We did the Self-Blessing ritual as popularized by Z.Budapest. It is something done at every circle (unless for some reason we forget!) because it is very empowering for women. We passed the cool, witchy looking mirror and the vial of oil around and each woman blesses herself. ( Note: We are going to get a full length mirror to place in the temple space for women to stand in front of and do the Self-Blessings rite. )

When were finished with that , a new sister graciously opened circle for us. We shared water between us and went upstairs to create our Goddess blessings bowls of clay and to feast on summer fruits and cheeses; chips and dips and even fried chicken! It was delicious!

It felt good to get our hands into the clay and allowing our inner child to play. Some of the women had some interesting suggestions as to how to soften up the clay! It was quite hysterical really. LOL

Our designs were as unique as we are. They were simple and beautiful just as we are.

(Later on, after everyone left I was left to my own to play with the left over clay and I created another Divine Beauty offering bowl/incense holder)

After a bit of clay making , a few left as they had long drives but those of us who stayed played the drums a bit. Some of us who had never experienced playing the drums had their first experience with it and seemed to enjoy it. I’ve not met anyone yet to this day who hasn’t played the drums and not enjoyed it! We played, we chatted, and played a bit some more until finally it was time to go.

These days are only once a month (for now) but I really look forward to the time spent with these amazing and incredible, beautiful magical women.  I consider it a privilege to serve these women in Her honor.

Blessed Be,

Next Circle: August 29th

Spiraling Up Through the Root

The monthly sister circle of Sister Spirit Sanctuary , Temple of the Sacred Feminine is July 25th 4 p.m to 6 p.m

Journey Through the Chakras

This month we will begin focusing on the chakras. Over the next several months, we will take a journey through the chakras exploring each chakra’s purpose and function as well as investigating the archetypes associated with each chakra. Our work will be centered on learning how to recognize if that chakra is out of balance and how to heal it with a variety of techniques.

This months theme:  The Root

We begin our journey through the chakra’s at the beginning, the root chakra.  The Root chakra is located at the very bottom of the spine. It channels the earths energy up to our higher chakra centers and helps to ground us in the physical plane and empower our being. The more grounded and connected to the source, the Earth Mother we are, the more we are able to receive Her constant energy and the more successful become at attaining our goals and achieving our dreams.

When we are disconnected from the earth, we disconnect ourselves from sustenance and energy from the earth as well as the ability to ground, to have a sense of stability to provide for ourselves in the mundane world. We experience the dysfunctional archetype which Ambika Wauters, in her book “Chakras and Their Archetypes: Uniting Energy Awareness and Spiritual Growth” calls “The Victim“.

In this journey of exploration of the Root chakra, we will explore meditations and affirmations and other ways in which to connect to the more positive, nurturing Mother within. As we learn to reconnect with the Mother, we find that we are better able to stop projecting our fears, issues and needs into the world and are able to successfully and lovingly look after ourselves.  We stop being “The Victim”

The creative expression work:

In this earth energy pathworking of  reconnecting with the Mother Earth, we will be working with clay and creating the Blessing Bowls/WombsBlessings Bowls are symbolic of the sacred womb, from which all life comes from. In creating these blessing bowls, we are not only creating something pretty for our altars, but honoring our own wombs, as the center of our creative process, our birthing abilities whether they are physical, artistic, intellectual, scientific or spiritual. We also honor our connection to the Mother Earth, Gaia.

We’ll be decorating these “Blessings/Womb Bowls” with beads, paints and carving our designs and intentions into them. We’ll also bake them in the 2 clay ovens we will have on hand.

Those planning to come should bring the following items:

  • 1-2 packages of clay –Sculpty works fine. We will also have extra but limited packages of Sculpty as well as fresh modeling clay made from flour.
  • Additional beads or clay tools if you have them and would like to use them in creating your “Blessing/Womb Bowl”. We will have supplies here but every little bit that can be contributed helps.

Weather permitting we’ll also be outside for a drumming circle.

If you plan to attend or need directions, please contact me via email at :

I look forward to seeing you there!

In deepest love and brightest light,

Priestess Aura

We came.We chanted.We received.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again I’m sure many times over–”When women gather in the bonds of spirit and creating sisterhood, it is truly magic.”

Our last sister circle, or “Circle of Sisters” as the women have taken to calling it was on June 27th, just one day after my 4oth birthday.  We gathered here at the temple home-base. When I say “temple home-base” let me elaborate a little bit. First of all, I am the mother-priestess of Sister Spirit Sanctuary and therefore having given birth to this circle for women, I tend to work from home a lot, usually in my personal sanctuary.

temple space

This is the matrix of where it all happens, where most of my ideas, dreams and activities take place outside as well as inside the realm of Sister Spirit Sanctuary. It is  a room that is my own personal sanctuary in my basement with securely hung canvas walls as well as canvas covered ceiling (both just waiting for some creativity to be added), purple walls, two couches–one of which I just finally took the feet off so it sits rather low. Perhaps time for another couch. Donations anyone?

On coming down the stairs to the temple, one is greeted by the statue of Kwan-Yin. There is a basket on one side of her and “worry stones” on the other. On entering and greeting Kwan-Yin, one may take a stone, contemplate and put all their worries into it and then place it in the basket for releasing later. I like to do it often. Sometimes I even light incense as well.

After making your way into the temple, you can see that I have altars set up, book shelves that have become altar spaces and all other kinds of things that a sister-witch-priestess would need for her ritual creation, spell casting and just simply being. It’s not the most extravagant of places but it is my own. I couldn’t think of a better use of this large basement space than creating a temple for myself and I do not mind sharing this space with women.  If we are not creating temple outside due to weather or privacy, I lovingly share my sacred space with sisters and other women.  One day, however, I hope to have a place of our own that will be specifically for the purpose of serving women and our needs, both spiritual and mundane.  See previous blog “Holding the Vision”

temple space

However, for now we make do just nicely.  So on to our experience of the day.  In the end of June, just days after the summer solstice, it’s not surprising we had the heat wave we did.  It was a very hot, humid and muggy day.  It’s not the heat itself that makes the weather unbearable, it is the humidity. I will take the dry heat of Arizona and Colorado any day over the heavy humidity we tend to get here in Ohio. It’s so heavy sometimes you simply can’t breathe or stand to do anything! Ugh!

Just shortly before the women arrived, I had taken a quick second shower to remove the stickiness the humidity had gifted me with.  I went downstairs into temple space with wet hair and all and applied my mascara. Although the basement is a tolerable or comfortable cool temperature, my amazing daughter set up the fan for us anyway. It just made it that much more comfortable.  I heard voices upstairs and I wondered why no one came down. Apparently they were waiting for me not sure whether to come on down or not.

Note to the women: If you come to my house for temple and I am already down there, feel free to come on down after you get yourself set up and situated with food, shoes and purses upstairs!

I invited them to come on down stairs and get comfy in our circle.  It was good to see familiar faces now becoming regulars and some new faces as well as ones I hadn’t seen in long time! All beautiful smiling faces lending their wonderful feminine energy to our circle.  I asked if everyone had everything they needed and if they remembered to bring their personal effect for the altar.  When everyone was situated and ready, I handed them altar cloths and items and to all create the altar together. Again and again it’s amazing to see women being careful not to crowd the other woman’s space out while she’s trying to find her own.

When I see this, I wish over and over that we as women might try harder to take this same behavior and apply it into the mundane world with one another instead of getting caught up competition and over-stepping into one another’s sacred boundaries of home and family, relationship, work and business and otherwise.  Let’s discard that shroud of patriarchy! Oh if only it were just that easy!

So we have created this beautiful altar, all of us adding something to it of our own and so we look at it for a moment or two pleased with ourselves and our creation.  Because this circle was about sacred words of power, and we were going to make meditation bracelets, I place the cauldron on the altar.  I ask that all the women place their beads into the altar so that we can bless and charge them with out intentions.  After we fill the cauldron, I ask that we all place our hand over the cauldron and I say a blessing and ask that each woman add a word to it and they do.  Beads are now blessed and charged with love and power.

After beads are blessed we begin our council. This is where we pass the rattle and where all women speak their own truth and we practice deep listening. Not giving positive or negative feed backs with smiles or anything else, just letting the women come into their own feelings and experience what needs to be experienced, spoken what needs to be spoken and shared what needs to be shared.  I usually start off the circle as women are still getting comfortable with how things work (this was, after all our third circle for this year) and I took the rattle and talked about things I felt I needed to.  Because I totally felt in a safe space, surrounded by women really listening to me it was much easier for me to for me to hear myself as well. I was speaking for myself, not trying to say anything that I thought others wanted to hear, should hear liked or did not like. I felt able to speak my own truth in that space we created. I learned more about myself as I spoke too because I think in those few moments I held the rattle, Goddess conscious opened up even more inside myself and took me further in. It was a wonderful experience for me of totally being in the moment of myself and these amazing women and spirit.  When I had nothing more to share, I passed the rattle and each woman in turn spoke her truth. Even the first timers who felt a little unsure of everything or if there was something specific they were supposed to say was able to get out a few sentences for sharing.  All in all when the rattle came back to me I believe that each woman shared what she needed to that day. It’s so good to feel like you can speak your truth among women who listen! No airs, no need to impress just truth!

After council, we were ready for the heart of everything. We smudged, cleansed and created our sacred space by inviting the elements into and around our center.  We invited ourselves to be open to Spirit from within as well as without. Because this was a circle about mantra’s and positive affirmations, we didn’t do any other chants and so forth that I might normally encourage women to do. Instead I talked a bit about mantras and we did them. We talked about what mantra was, what its purpose is and how it can help us manifest change in our lives. We also explored briefly different types of mantra, from chanting, writing and breathing and thinking mantra, even whispering mantra and how to use the power of mantra to focus the attention, to awaken the unconscious activating the inner forces of deep transformation.  Although I talked about Tibetan mantra I didn’t focus much on that as much as using positive affirmation as mantra. We did do the “Om” mantra, as well as Om mani padme hum and the Green Tara mantra, which seemed to be the favorite.

We didn’t get through the entire mala or the 108 repetitions but we did manage to do 27 repetitions of the chants.  And it was good!

Then we turned our focus to using positive affirmations as mantra. Sure, some say it might not have the same vibration quality as the Sanskrit mantra with the power of sound, however, I think positive affirmations said, written, thought, chanted, or whispered over and over has the incredible power of opening up centers of our inner Self for transformation and change on many levels.  For some women, it’s a powerful and if not extremely difficult and even almost an impossible thing to manage to say something positive about themselves.  Some women have been so abused, hurt and their self-esteem is so incredibly low that even saying “I am a beautiful person” is a struggle because they don’t believe it. Sanskrit would be so much easier as even though they may read a positive meaning and translation of what they are saying, it is still foreign to them and can easily be passed off as gibberish whereas actually speaking and affirming aloud something positive about one self in a language they understand challenges them to dare to speak highly of themselves.  Now the fun part, creating the positive affirmation!

Each woman was given a pen and note card to write down the affirmations.  As I spoke about the power of them and how to create them in the present tense, and offered a few of my own to them to write down. Then I invited each woman, as we went around the circle, to say something positive about herself.  I could see tears’ welling up in some eyes as they struggled with the words to say just one nice thing about themselves but by Mother Goddess they did it and wow, what magic it was! What a bit of a break thru for some women.  I encouraged them to write down their own affirmations and to say them often! Some might say “Oh so no big deal” but then they perhaps are the lucky ones with healthy self-esteem and so this for them might come natural. For many women, as I previously stated, this is an enormous step in the right direction for awakening to their own divinity, inner beauty and empowerment!  We went circle ’round several times with this exercise until we were feeling pretty good. Because it’s such a powerful tool and technique for initiating positive transformation, it was important to explore this topic is sacred space and I am sure we will explore it again.

My body is the temple of the Goddess. I am perfect. I am divine.

One bead, pretty bead, sparkly bead, skinny bead, round bead…oh so many beads!

The cauldron was filled with so many different beads. All shapes and sizes, colors and styles. Just like the women of this earth. All beautiful! They each brought their special charm/s to add to their bracelet. I had provided the hemp thread however, it was a little thicker than some of the beads so some of the pretty beads we didn’t use this time, however we have other plans for those! (And I got the perfect thread for anything else we might create with smaller beads)  The night before I took some beautiful rose quarts beads and cleansed them in salt water, smudged them with sage and then let them sit all night under the light of a super charged full moon. (There was also a lunar eclipse too.) I wanted each woman to have two of them for their bracelet as a reminder of our connection to one another and our circle experience. In the end, some really creative and beautiful meditation bracelets were created.

All the chitter chatter going on, the women creating a buzz just adding to the energy of the circle really made for a wonderful time.  When we were all finished, we admired one another’s bracelets. Then we brainstormed ideas for future circles as well as other crafty ideas to do with beads later on. We talked about little donations of items to the circle to for future use. Since we use a bindi on our forehead every circle (to help open up that third chakra) the women also decided to leave their body stickers and bindi’s here to for other women who come who might not have them. Amazing what women come up with left their own creativity and their ideas are honored.

Then we opened up circle.  We laughed, we giggled, and we talked.  We went upstairs to feast on fruit and veggies and pasta salad! It was good.  I am looking forward to the next Sister-Circle where we will be using clay and creating sacred vessels/blessing/offering bowls for our altar.  July 25th from 4pm-6pm

Despite the heat, it was a wonderful circle!

We came, We chanted and We received.

A Gathering of Women

Sister Spirit Sanctuary, Temple of Goddess

A Gathering of Women

Sister Spirit Sanctuary, Temple of the Sacred Feminine

is a place where women-born-women gather celebration of themselves, their connection to one another and to Nature.  Women-born-women from different cultural backgrounds, political and sectarian beliefs gather in celebration of feminine values and the Divine Feminine Spirit, freed from the constraints of traditional patriarchal creeds.

Once a month, the women of Sister Spirit Sanctuary gather together in the spirit of creating and building the bonds of sisterhood and lend our energy to ritual that empowers us as women. The act of ritual keeps us present and aware of our purpose. We embrace our feminine values and know that they are good. We remember and reclaim our power as women and a spirituality that is uniquely our own.

As Women-born-women, we see ourselves and our life experiences and natural processes through our cycles of menarche, pregnancy, childbirth, menopause and death reflected in the rhythms of Nature. We reclaim these experiences that we share as sacred and honor them through celebration and ritual.

Although magic happens naturally, when women gather for the purpose of empowering our sweet souls, our monthly “Sister Circle” is not a “girls night out” or for the purposes of spell casting and magic. It is however, a spiritual, in many ways even political, woman-positive focused gathering in which the main objective is the empowerment of women through the celebration of the female connection to the universe as a magical part of our lives.

We welcome all women with a joyous and open heart to join us in celebration of the female spirit! Our Sister Spirit Circles is time spent exploring story, song, meditation, and ritual, art,  and other forms of creativity,  even dance! All intended to nourish the feminine spirit.

Come! Bring your pillow to sit on, your candle and personal effect for the altar. Enrich your spirit and mind and deepen your spiritual connection to the Divine Feminine within by sharing in a community of women dedicated to personal and spiritual growth and Sisterhood.

Feel free to bring your drums, rattles, guitars etc…And gather with your sisters and those who may become your sisters! Our Sister Spirit Circles meet every 4nd Sunday of the month from 4 pm to 6 pm at a location that is announced on our blog and Yahoo!
